A Hidden Friendship
I arrived at Jennifer’s apartment and she greeted me with such warmth. I felt such love from her. Right then I knew I had selected the right place to be. She lived in a two-bedroom apartment that she shared with her sister, Amanda. It was a cute apartment. It had an open layout, which made it very inviting. She showed me around and when we walked up the stairs to her bedroom, I realized that the room was out in the open. Her bedroom didn’t have a door and you could literally look down to the living room from her room.
She had made space for my things in her closet and had emptied two drawers for me. She walked back down, giving me some time to put my things away. I didn’t have many things to put away but I took my time. As I put the last things away, I heard Jennifer ask me a question from down below.
“Do you want sugar or honey with your tea?” she asked.
“Ummm…you decide. I don’t care,” I answered back while walking down the stairs.
“Honey it is, then. It’s better for you anyway.”
“Then why do you even ask, woman?” I responded with a smile.
We both sat down at the kitchen table.
“So…tell me, are you okay?” she asked caringly.
“Yeah…I’m okay. I just feel like I’m in a dream. I can’t believe I did it. You know, it’s just going to take a while to get used to it.”
“Well, I want you to know that I’m proud of you. I know how hard it was for you.”
We talked for hours. I shared with her all the things I had gone through since we last saw each other. My chatting on the Internet, my conversations with Melissa, and I read her the letter I wrote. She told me about her new boyfriend, how they met, and how she ended up living with her sister. It was a great feeling to know that I didn’t have to rush my conversation with her. We could finally enjoy each other’s company without reservation or rushing through. Before either one of us noticed, it was three in the morning.
“Oh, my God…did you notice what time it is?” she asked.
“Damn…I can’t believe it. I’m not even tired,” I responded.
“Well, we have to call it a night. Unlike you, I have to go to work in a couple of hours,” she exclaimed with a bright smile.
She brought over some covers for me to use and we both went to bed. The feeling of freedom was amazing but even though I was not tired, I had no problems falling asleep. I woke up several hours later, finding myself all alone in the apartment. ALONE. This was new to me. I hadn’t been alone in over eight years. I wasn’t quite sure what to do with myself.
After lying on the couch for a couple of hours in silence, I got up and took a shower. Since there was no coffee to be found, I made myself some tea.
